Giraffe Eastern Symbolism
The followers of Confucius in China regard a giraffe as a lucky sign. However, giraffe symbolism took on a new meaning as a result of Zheng He (the Chinese Admiral who aided to establish China’s superpower status in the East).
On his return journey, Zheng He brought back a giraffe. The giraffe came to symbolize China’s tremendous might, which prompted the foreign wonderland to stand up.
The giraffe is still a potent symbol in China today, representing Africa and the long historical ties between the two countries. The Japanese word for “giraffe” is kirin, which comes from modern Japanese.
