HOW A STAR WARS FAN CREATED A NEW DROID FOR DISNEY+’S OBI-WAN KENOBI

STARWARS.COM TALKS TO BUILD MY DROID CONTEST WINNER CAMILLE MANET ABOUT KP-1 AND SEEING HIM COME TO LIFE.

This is the droid you’ve been searching for. KP-1, an astromech with three distinct, modular pieces that form a cone shape, debuted in Episode V of ‘Star Wars.’

KP-1 was not designed by Lucasfilm’s Art Department. He does not derive from comics or other media. Nor is he a leftover construction from a previous Star Wars film. KP-1 comes to the galaxy far, far away as a result of another source: Camille Manet, a fan of Star Wars.

KP-1 is a female robot created by David for Build My Droid, a contest organized by Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Force For Change initiative and FIRST, which aims to encourage the next generation of heroes and inventors in STEM. Her entry was KP-1: a droid with features and personality that looked very much like a Star Wars movie droid but was nonetheless unique.
